This one's for Uncle Steve - but it's actually for every suit in every nation who ever took the charlatan seriously.

Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft Corporation, known for intimidating customers who dare breathe a word about his lock-in contracts or possibly - perish the thought - leaving Windows altogether, chairman of a company with one of the worst quality track records in modern history, really thinks he can scare people about open source.

Up to now he and his dweeby convicted criminal friend Mister Bill have called Unix 'communist', a 'cancer', and about every dirty name in the shamed city of Redmond Washington - but the final straw was when he claimed open source is not supported and that no one ever knows who wrote it.

Which to people in the know can elicit comments like 'pardon?' or 'wa?' or worse, even more dramatic.

What's important here is that people 'in the know' are not the ones making the purchasing decisions: the suits - who are generally not in the know - are the ones making those decisions.

Every installation of Apple's OS X - which is 'Unix' and heavily based on open source - comes with the huge file 'Acknowledgements.rtf' in the folder '/Library/Documentation'. It is predicated by the very nature of open source software: that is, to give credit where credit is due.

Common UNIX Printing System License Agreement

INTRODUCTION

The Common UNIX Printing System™, (CUPS™), is provided under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and GNU Library General Public License (LGPL), Version 2, with exceptions for Apple operating systems. A copy of the exceptions and licenses follow this introduction.

The GNU LGPL applies to the CUPS API library, located in the cups subdirectory of the CUPS source distribution and in the /usr/include/cups directory and libcups.a, libcups_s.a, libcups.sl, libcups.so, or libcups.dylib files in the binary distributions.

The GNU GPL applies to the remainder of the CUPS distribution, including the pstoraster filter which is based upon GNU Ghostscript 5.50 and the pdftops filter which is based upon Xpdf 0.93a.

For those not familiar with the GNU GPL, the license basically allows you to:

- Use the CUPS software at no charge.

- Distribute verbatim copies of the software in source or binary form.

- Sell verbatim copies of the software for a media fee, or sell support for the software.
